Home Central Kawana team.

Up close and personal – Gordon Wallace (Caloundra City Council Deputy Mayor and Councillor)

Q1. You have been the Division 5 Councillor for three years. What motivated you to join local government and what do you enjoy most? I was elected in 2001 after campaigning to prevent the construction of an artificial reef just offshore of the Kawana beaches. The construction of this reef would have caused a financial and environmental disaster. I am extremely proud that I played a major role in protecting our beaches from such an ill-conceived proposal.

Q2. Prior to local government what were you involved in and how does this enable you to be an effective Councillor?
I was a Commercial Diver, SCUBA master instructor and a ship’s master. My affinity with the marine environment has taught me that above all things we must preserve all environments for future generations. I have ongoing plans for further actions by Council to ensure a healthy planet.

Q3. How do you explain the commercial boom and strong business confidence that is sweeping the wider Caloundra area?
Sea change, resources boom, a healthy economy and a healthy place to live. Also, a Council dedicated to ensuring that Caloundra City is seen as accommodating and helpful in assisting job creation and fast-tracking new business endeavours.

YOUR COUNCILLOR: Caloundra City Councillor Gordon Wallace oversees Division 5 which incorporates Home Central Kawana.

Q4. What role has the Caloundra City Council played in supporting the development of Home Central Kawana?
The Caloundra City Council has played a big role. We fast-tracked the opening of Spotlight following the fire in their store on the Nicklin Way. By granting approval for that store to open before the centre was completed we saved many workers from a long period of unemployment. This "prior to completion" opening of a major operative also gave the centre early recognition by consumers before opening of the complex as a whole.

Q5. As Councillor of Division 5 which includes HCK, what are you able to offer retailers and new business?

The same as I offer to all residents and business operatives - full support in their legal endeavours and assistance in all council related matters wherever and whenever they need me.

Q6. What is your favourite household room or item?

I am fortunate in the extreme that my home backs onto the natural bushland of the coastal dunes. I can sit in my sunroom and be just a few metres from the native vegetation and the multitude of wildlife that exists in the dunal forest.

Q7. What is your favourite Sunshine Coast pastime?

Cycling and body surfing. I love the outdoors.

Pedal power sends 27 kids to camp
Remember our story on the Caloundra Coastal Bike Ride a few editions ago?

Well, more than 600 cycling enthusiasts turned out for the event raising $15,000 for one of Australia’s favourite children’s charities.

The money raised will enable 27 children with cancer, and their carers, to attend a Camp Quality recreational camp.

The bike ride attracted nearly double the number of riders compared to last year’s event including members of the Home Central Kawana construction team Sam Frith, Gerard Graham, Elliot McLeod and Luke Shaw and their families.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this worthwhile cause!
